McKeldin Library sits at one end of the central McKeldin Mall and at the other end is the Administration Building and Reckord Armory. These buildings at opposite ends of the mall made the mall in between an optimal natural site for the 1960’s anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. As the assembled crowds of demonstrators were treated with tear gas and pepper smog to disperse them, the gas clouds would waif through the open windows of McKeldin providing an unexpected study challenge. The students and demonstrators were positioned at the library end of the mall and the National Guard was positioned at the armory end of the mall.
